Most homeowners have never seen their project in 3D before it's built. Here's why that matters — and how our process works from first call to finished yard.
The most common regret we hear from homeowners who worked with other contractors: 'It didn't look like what I thought it would.' That's almost always a design communication problem, not a craftsmanship problem. When both parties are working from a flat sketch or a vague verbal description, they're filling in different details in their heads — and those differences show up once the work is done.
What 3D landscape design actually is
It's not a sketch, and it's not a photo of someone else's yard. We take measurements of your specific property, input them into design software, and build a model of your project with accurate dimensions, elevations, and material finishes. You can view it from any angle. You can walk through it. You can see how the patio connects to the back door, how the retaining wall looks from the kitchen window, how the pergola casts shade at 3pm. It's your yard — just rendered before we break ground.
How it changes the client experience
When you can see exactly what you're getting, decisions become easy. Want the pavers two shades lighter? Done — let's update the model and look again. Wondering if the patio is big enough? We can show you a furniture layout inside the 3D design. Curious how it looks at night with lighting? We can render that. The back-and-forth that used to happen after installation — 'I didn't realize it would feel this small' or 'I thought the wall would be higher' — gets resolved during the design phase instead.
Why it saves money
Changes during design cost nothing. Changes during or after construction cost real money. Moving a paver patio that's already installed requires tearing it out and rebuilding it. Adding a pergola post that wasn't in the original plan means reworking a concrete footing. When you're working from a detailed 3D model that you've reviewed and approved, everyone is aligned before a shovel touches the ground. There are no surprises, no change orders, no 'I thought we agreed on this.' The project runs cleaner, finishes faster, and stays on budget.
Our process start to finish
It starts with a conversation — either on the phone or in person. We want to understand how you use your yard, what you're trying to solve, and what kind of budget you're working with. From there, we schedule a site visit to measure the space and see the conditions firsthand. We build the 3D model and present it to you — usually within a week or two of the initial visit. You review it, make changes, and once you're happy with the design, we finalize materials and pricing. You approve the full scope before anything is scheduled.
This is included in your free estimate
We don't charge for the 3D design consultation. It's part of how we work, not an upsell. If you ultimately go with a different contractor, that's fine — you'll at least have seen your project in 3D and have a clear picture of what you want.
